2. What is the significance of Aston Hill and why was it chosen as the new name for the company?
Aston Hill is located close to the main A41 road, in the region of Aylesbury, in the centre of southern England. The area inspired Lionel Martin to name his automotive company accordingly, after having great success in the hill climb competition up Aston Hill in 1913. Today, Aston Hill is a lush area of small hamlets, near to the escarpment of Chiltern Hills.
When Eric Tremblay accepted the role as Executive Chairman of Overlord Financial, he was keen to make his individual mark on the investment management company started by his father, Marcel, while also inspiring the management team with a vision of a professional, forward-thinking, and entrepreneurial enterprise. Accordingly, Eric and his partner Ben’s passion for classic automobiles resulted in a stream of creative thinking that settled on the name Aston Hill Financial.
With the establishment of an office in Toronto in early 2007 to coincide with the hiring of Ben Cheng, the growth of the firm’s suite of investment products, and the continuous generation of evolutionary financial concepts for execution in the future, Aston Hill Financial aims to continue growing according to the modern, sleek, and rich tradition of leadership instilled by Marcel Tremblay.

4. When was the original company founded and what is the story of the company’s evolution?
Aston Hill Financial Inc. was formerly known as Overlord Financial Inc., which took over a small company by the name of Green Maple Energy Inc. on September 24, 2001. Marcel Tremblay orchestrated the buy-out of Green Maple, so that he could have a new place to grow his innovative business ideas rooted in tax-efficient investment structures for the everyday investor. After creating the income trust structure in 1986 and operating the Enerplus Resources Fund for over a decade, Overlord Financial was Marcel’s focus until he passed away due to illness on December 29, 2005.
Eric Tremblay took the helm of Overlod Financial Inc. in November, 2006. A Toronto office was opened in February of 2007 when Eric’s partner Ben Cheng came aboard. The company changed its name to Aston Hill Financial at the following Annual General Meeting in May 2007.
5. Why is Aston Hill positioned at an advantage to other investment management firms?
Aston Hill Financial offers a unique range of expertise in the oil and gas industry, in the income fund sector, in the high yield market, and in structured investment products, to pension funds, institutional investors, corporations, and accredited individuals. After Canada’s Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, announced that income funds and royalty trusts would become taxable in a manner similar to corporations after a four-year grace period, Aston Hill’s value proposition became stronger and clearer.
Today, Aston Hill is demonstrating that its knowledge and forward-thinking ability will be responsible for part of the evolution of the income fund sector, as documented on April 24, 2007 in the announcement of its involvement in the transaction to privatize the Thunder Energy Trust. Helping stakeholders of the capital markets understand current trends, future structural environments, and possible solutions for investors’ needs is the reason that Aston Hill is positioned to succeed as a growing competitor within the investment management industry.
6. How does Aston Hill Financial earn money?
Aston Hill Financial earns revenues in a manner similar to other investment management firms in Canada. By managing investment portfolios, oil and gas properties, and providing portfolio advisory services, the company is paid for its expertise, typically on a basis-point scale. Aston Hill Financial aims to grow revenues by increasing its assets under management and issuing new investment products, by entering into more contracts to manage ‘hard assets’ in the oil and gas industry, and by extending its expert knowledge to third-party investment fund managers in the high yield, income fund, and junior oil and gas industries.
Aston Hill Financial also earns capital gains from making direct investment in oil and gas assets, in the attractive financial securities of private and public companies, and in other ways, as reported and discussed on its interim and annual financial statements, which can be found on www.SEDAR.com.
